The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program is pleased to announce that nominations for the 2016-2017 award year are open. To submit a nomination for an exceptional grades 7-12 teacher, complete the nomination form available on the PAEMST website, and submit the teacher’s name, email address and school contact information. If you know more than one teacher deserving of this award, you may submit multiple nominations.

The 2016-2017 nomination deadline is April 1, 2017, and the application deadline is May 1, 2017. Teachers may also apply directly at **www.paemst.org**.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has released a “blue Canvas icon” within your district’s IAM/NCEdCloud application tray. Within this Canvas instance, NC math teachers of record for NC Math 1, 2, and 3, will have access to the professional learning resource entitled "NC Mathematics Collaboratory". This icon will be a temporary shortcut to replace users having to type in the direct link: ncdpi.instructure.com.

All educators will have access to any professional learning within NCDPI’s Canvas Instance at no cost to individual districts.

Please note, access to the blue icon does not allow for LEAs and charters to create locally developed content; individual districts/charters would need to purchase Canvas to create learning opportunities for students. North Carolina PAEMST Recipients Announced (August, 2016)

North Carolina teachers were recently named Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) recipients – the highest honor bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 mathematics and science teaching. The 2014 Elementary Mathematics recipient is: Kayonna Pitchford, previously with Stoney Point Elementary, Cumberland County Schools, and now with The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The 2015 Secondary Mathematics recipient is: Lauren Baucom, Forest Hills High School, Union County Schools.

NEWMathematics Resources for Instruction for NC Math 1, 2 & 3 Draft Documents Draft versions of the NC Math 1-3 Resources for Instruction are now available for teacher use and review. The documents currently include content connections and explanations & illustrations for assessing student understanding of the standards. The Standards for Mathematical Practices(SMPs) and Instructional Resources sections are still under development and will be updated throughout the month of August. We have created a survey to collect feedback on the revision docs and any resources that can be included for the standards. Educator's Survey (October 27, 2014)

This fall the NC Department of Public Instruction begins the standards review process for the mathematics standards. We will be following our established State Board policy (GCS-F-012) that calls for a standards review of content standards every five years. As the NCDPI standards review process progresses, we look forward to gathering information from stakeholders to inform the work of the NCDPI Standards Review Committee. To gather input, NCDPI is administering two surveys this fall—one in October for educators and one in November for the broader community. The educators’ survey is now live for teachers and other educators to complete: http://ncdpireview.weebly.com (Dec 31, 2014) We hope you will take this survey and provide your specific feedback regarding the current mathematics standards. Your feedback will be extremely valuable as we move through this process.

The 2013–14 school year is the first year of administration for the NC Final Exam of Discrete Mathematics. The releasing of forms or items typically occurs in September following the first administration of an assessment. This process allows the NCDPI to review the item statistics from both the fall and spring administrations and release a set of items that is representative of the assessment. A set of “sample” items are linked to this message. The attached document was posted to the NCDPI/NC Final Exams Released Forms web page this afternoon (http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/common-exams/released-forms/) this afternoon. Notification of a slight change in the K-8 Numbering System of CCSS for Mathematics (July 2013)

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics has not changed any standards but you may have noticed the numbering system has been slightly modified by the writers. They have now added a letter to identify the bold heading of each Domain.

Operations & Algebraic Thinking Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. 2.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.1 Add and subtract within 20. 2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.2 By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. 2.OA.3 Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.

Standards have not changed but the numbering system has changed slightly. We wanted to notify you of this change so as you encounter this new numbering system you’ll understand how it relates to the original CCSS numbering system which is what North Carolina is using at this time.

2013-2014 K-2 Mid-Year Mathematics Assessments

Several districts have requested a list of standards that will be assessed on the 2013-2014 Mid-Year Mathematics Assessments. This may be helpful if you have or are revising your district-level pacing guides. We have created a table for each grade level that includes the standards being assessed at Mid-Year. Common Core Online Math Modules (FREE)

UNC Charlotte’s College of Education, in conjunction with the STEM Center and Southwest Education Alliance is proud to announce the release of Online Mathematics Modules. If you are a K-2, 3-5 or 6-8, 9-12 mathematics teacher, facilitator, coach or administrator in charge of mathematics professional development, earn CEU for participating in an online module that focuses on the mathematical practices and content of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Each module takes approximately 10 hours to finish, and can be completed either individually at your own pace or preferably with other teachers in a Professional Learning Community. We envision these modules being used by math coaches and facilitators at their schools with groups of teachers during professional development time. This fall the NC Department of Public Instruction begins the standards review process for the mathematics standards. We will be following our established State Board policy (GCS-F-012) that calls for a standards review of content standards every five years.Educator's Survey(October 27, 2014)As the NCDPI standards review process progresses, we look forward to gathering information from stakeholders to inform the work of the NCDPI Standards Review Committee. To gather input, NCDPI is administering two surveys this fall—one in October for educators and one in November for the broader community.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program is pleased to announce that nominations for the 2014-2015 award year are open. To submit a nomination for an exceptional grades 7-12 teacher, complete the nomination form available on the PAEMST website, and submit the teacher’s name, email address and school contact information. 2014-2015 K-2 Mid-Year Mathematics Assessments (July, 2014)We have posted the 2014-2015 Mid-Year Benchmark Assessment Standards on the Mathematics wiki under the appropriate grade levels. This may be helpful if revising your district-level pacing guides. We have created a table for each grade level that includes the standards being assessed at Mid-Year. The 2013–14 school year is the first year of administration for the NC Final Exam of Discrete Mathematics. The releasing of forms or items typically occurs in September following the first administration of an assessment. Common Core State Standards for Mathematics hasnotchanged any standards but you may have noticed the numbering system has been slightly modified by the writers. UNC Charlotte’s College of Education, in conjunction with the STEM Center and Southwest Education Alliance is proud to announce the release of Online Mathematics Modules. If you are a K-2, 3-5 or 6-8, 9-12 mathematics teacher, facilitator, coach or administrator in charge of mathematics professional development, earn CEU for participating in an online module that focuses on the mathematical practices and content of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.Each module takes approximately 10 hours to finish, and can be completed either individually at your own pace or preferably with other teachers in a Professional Learning Community. We envision these modules being used by math coaches and facilitators at their schools with groups of teachers during professional development time.
